Chronic arthritis affects 52.5 million adults, and with aging baby boomers this number is expected to increase to 67 million by 2030. Currently, there is no cure and the treatment options available leave patients wanting. In the State of Illinois, rheumatoid arthritis is a qualifying condition for medical cannabis, though it is still not a qualifying condition in other states. Research will continue to grow as medical cannabis becomes more widely accepted, both socially and scientifically.

When one is suffering from arthritis, they are dealing with an extremely painful disease. Aside from regular joint pain, there are additional symptoms:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Peripheral neuropathies
  • Locked joints
  • Improperly healed injuries
  • And more

Medical cannabis has been proven to aid in pain relief, and to have anti-inflammatory qualities, both of which will help with arthritis.

Though research is growing, there are certain studies that point to the effectiveness of medical cannabis for arthritis. The journal Rheumatology published a study that measured the CB2 receptors in arthritis patients, finding that there is an unusually high number in their joint tissue. Medical cannabis “is shown to fight inflammation in the joints by activating the pathways of CB2 receptors.”

Another study that will be completed in the coming years aims to see if medical cannabis can fight the actual inflammation and repair the joint in addition to providing pain relief. This research is based off of past patients, such as Katie Marsh, who began juicing raw cannabis. After eleven months of this, her arthritis was actually in remission.

If you or a loved one are suffering from arthritis in the State of Illinois, relief is available in the form of medical cannabis. Once you have your Registry Identification Card, see how Greenhouse can help!
