Tarlov cysts also referred to as perineural cysts, are fluid-filled sacs that impact the nerve roots of the spine, especially near the base of the spine in the sacral region. Those who have Tarlov cysts may suffer from either one cyst or multiple cysts that vary in size. Tarlov cysts differ from other spinal lesions because of the presence of spinal nerve root fibers within the cyst wall or the cyst cavity. This type of cyst is present in approximately five to nine percent of the general population, and it is more common for women to get them than men. Despite Tarlov cysts first being identified in 1938, there is limited scientific research available on them.

Causes

The cause of the development of Tarlov cysts is unknown, however, there are theories about what causes them. Several documented studies show a correlation between accidents or falls that involve the tailbone area of the spine caused by a previously undiagnosed Tarlov cyst that flares up.

Symptoms

The symptoms depend on the exact size and location of the cysts, and the larger the cyst, the more likely it is to cause symptoms. If there is an increase in pressure in or on the cysts, it may cause symptoms to worsen. Symptoms vary, and they may flare up for a little and then subside. Typically, they include pain in the affected area due to nerves, numbness, difficulty sitting for a long period of time, loss of sensation on the skin, loss of reflexes, an altered sensation, the inability to control bladder or bowel movements, impotence, and weakness in the legs.

Many people who suffer from Tarlov cysts find that the only way to find relief is by reclining flat on one’s side, as sitting, standing, walking and bending are usually painful.

Medical Marijuana and Tarlov Cysts

As Tarlov cysts cause nerve pain, medical cannabis has proven to be an effective treatment method to provide relief. It is important to note that the method of medical marijuana consumption plays a role in how effective treatment is for Tarlov cysts. It can also be beneficial to use a combination of smoking, vaporizing, topicals and edibles to treat Tarlov cyst pain.
